Do’s and Don’t for steel chain slings

  2. Don’t exceed the sling’s rated capacity.
  3. Don’t twist or kink the chain during use.
  4. Don’t drag slings along the ground or floor.
  5. Don’t use slings in temperatures beyond their rated limits.

Discard criteria

Here are the criteria for discarding steel chain slings:

  1. Missing or illegible identification
  2. Cracks or breaks in the chain or fittings.
  3. Excessive wear, nicks, or gouges.
  4. Stretched chain links or fittings.
  5. Bent, twisted, or deformed chain links or fittings.
  6. Evidence of heat damage.
  7. Excessive pitting or corrosion.
  8. Restricted movement of chain links or inability to hinge freely.

If any of these conditions are present, the chain sling should be removed from service immediately to ensure safety.
